The right way to handle water damage and the mold it causes

Many people believe that they are able to handle clean-up after water damage like flooding, burst pipes or rain damage.  Truth is you might do a fine job cleaning up the surface, but what you can’t see is the deep damage.   There’s a good chance you will end up with a mold problem! This is a costly problem that threatens your health and property.  Do it right the first time.  Call a professional.

WATER DAMAGE CAUSED BY SEVER FLOODING

Damage caused by severe flooding, heavy rains, inclement weather, burst pipes, faulty appliances, or any other action that causes a large amount of water to be deposited in one area will usually cause heavy  water damage.  Heavy water damage is damage that causes extensive problems like ruined walls, floors, and furnishings, damage to electronics, and mold.

WHAT IS MOLD AND HOW IT WORKS

Mold: a microscopic organism which reproduces rapidly and digests organic matter. It “blooms out “and releases thousands of spores that immediately begin to grow.  It requires moisture, warmth, and a medium to grow in. Your water damaged house provides the perfect medium.  Mold starts growing 24-48 hours of being introduced to the proper conditions. Most of the time you do not see it till it is too late for superficial cleaning.  It can cause extensive damage to objects, and respiratory problems for humans and other animals.

PREVENTING MOLD AFTER WATER DAMAGE

After water damage occurs, it is important to take the proper steps to avoid mold growth. Since mold begins growth within 24 hours, steps to stop it need to be taken right away.

  • Extract all water from the area. use vacuum equipment if necessary
  • Thoroughly dry the entire area. Use dehumidifiers if needed
  • Replace drywall, decking, insulation, and flooring If necessary
  • Treat washable areas with a mold fighting cleaner, like industrial bleach, to prevent re-infestation
  • Lower the humidity – molds like to grow in moist conditions at between 50-90 degrees

Dehumidifiers, fans, and professional grade equipment are best used by the professionals trained in their operation for optimal results.

The most efficient way to prevent mold is to prevent water damage from occurring. While you cannot control inclement weather, you can inspect your home regularly for leaks, faulty drains, and ruptured pipes and hoses around your home or connected to your appliances like your dishwasher, fridge, and washing machine.  If you do sustain water damage, contact a professional service immediately.
